12th Regional Rapid Chess Championship
The Girona rapid chess circuit, now in its twelfth edition, has borne the name of Albert Badosa Romanyó —the region's chess delegate for Girona— since he passed away in 2021. In Figueres it is played every summer.
Prizes
As the tradition of a village memorial demands, the trophies come with the finest larder of the Empordà: cured ham, cheese, fuet sausage and wine. The overall podium and the category winners are rewarded.

The Girona Standard Circuit
The Memorial Albert Badosa is not a standalone tournament: it is a circuit that travels across the Girona counties from June to September, and Figueres is one of its venues. The overall standings count each player's 7 best results toward the global prizes.

Who Albert Badosa was
«Chess makes me a better person.»
Albert Badosa Romanyó — territorial delegate for Girona, 2014–2020
He learned to play at thirteen at the Olot club, gave it up at eighteen, and came back for good in 2002. In 2012 he founded the Club d'Escacs Santa Pau, and from 2014 to 2020 he served as territorial delegate for Girona — the man who kept chess running across the Girona region.
Good-natured and always ready for a game, he used to say that every day he learned something new. The federation awarded him its silver badge. He left us in February 2021, at the age of 62; ever since, the Girona rapid circuit has borne his name. Obituary at the FCDE →

Watch him play
The memorial is more than a biography. Here he is at the board: two of his wins, recovered from the database. Play them through.
At the club where, as a young man, he learned to play. With White, a king-and-pawn endgame steered with a firm hand all the way to promotion.
At his highest Elo (2027). A solid Caro-Kann with Black and a patient, drawn-out win by someone who knew the craft.
Gens Una Sumus
Albert Badosa is one of so many friends who have left us. René Alonso García, Sergi Clara, Jan Timman, Daniel Naroditsky… we remember them all —from the Empordà to the wider world— in their games and in their friendship.
